Grip socks are essential for football players, as they can help to prevent injuries such as blisters and provide a better grip for the foot in shoes. They are also helpful in reducing slippage which can occur with frequent running and movement. Unlike normal socks, grip socks usually have rubber or silicone attached to the bottom of them in either dots or lines which can add traction to the shoe. In this study, we investigated whether grip socks reduce in-shoe foot motion and improve change of direction performance. All participants were asked to perform a series of side-cut and turn change of direction manoeuvres in both regular and grip socks. These manoeuvres were completed over a force plate in order to measure the utilised coefficient of friction between the shoe and the ground.
The results demonstrated that grip socks increased the utilised coefficient of friction between the heel and ground by approximately 1.17% compared to regular socks, which accounted for about 0.60% of the total force exerted. This effect was greater during the turn manoeuvres than during the braking phase. In addition, the results indicated that females may require a higher utilised coefficient of friction than males due to their slender instep dimensions.
